Over specialization in one sport may hurt young athletes!

We need to talk. About the kids. Your kids, my kids, all kids. Over specialization in one sport in young athletes is not necessary to achieve elite status. Spend more than 16 hours a week on one sport and the risk for injury goes up substantially. Children are specializing in one sport as early as 10 years of age. The risks of single-sport intense training include adverse psychological stress and premature withdrawal from competitive sport. Current data suggest that intense training and specialization may be independent risk factors according to Dr Jayanthi, the lead author. Read. Think. Educate.
